White House Proposing $1.2 billion NIH Budget Cut for Fiscal Year 2017

Jameson is certainly following what’s going on in D.C. and how certain budget cuts – or increases – may impact our clients.  The majority of our clients are doing business with the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Department of Energy, among others.

While those working on military contracts may see a spike in funding, those utilizing funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy may soon see a decrease in available funds.

The Trump Administration has made it clear that it will work to increase military spending; however, it is also proposing to cut the National Institutes of Health’s budget, targeting research grants. The White House is proposing an overall $18 billion across the board budget reduction for the current fiscal year ending September 30, 2017.  Of that $18 billion, the White House is aiming to cut the National Institutes of Health’s budget by $1.2 billion (again, that’s this fiscal year!).

Looking to fiscal 2018, President Trump has proposed a $6 billion cut from the National Institutes of Health’s budget.  While the final budget must be created and approved by the legislative branch of government, should these measures become a reality, it will have a heavy impact on funding available for research and development activities.
